GEO and ChatGPT Ads: What They Mean for Visibility

The way people discover brands has fundamentally changed. It’s no longer just about ranking on page one of Google. Today, brands need to show up in AI-powered search results, inside AI platforms like ChatGPT, Google AI and Perplexity, and across a rapidly expanding universe of emerging discovery channels, from voice assistants to AI-curated feeds.
We’ve been watching this shift closely at SPM Communications, and have built a forward-looking capability to meet it head-on. SPM Communications leverages AI insights and Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) to help brands appear in AI overview search results, AI platforms and other emerging discovery channels.
Sponsored Visibility in AI Platforms
AI platforms are evolving at a pace that demands active monitoring and agile strategy.
In February 2026, OpenAI began rolling out ads inside ChatGPT, with branded placements appearing alongside relevant queries, clearly marked “Sponsored.” OpenAI has been explicit that sponsored content does not influence organic AI answers. Ads are targeted based on individual conversation context and past chat history, not embedded inside the AI’s response. The organic answer and the ad card remain structurally separate layers.
Google already introduced ads inside its AI Overviews. Shopping and search ads appear within the AI-generated summary itself, not just alongside it. Unlike ChatGPT’s separate card approach, Google’s ads are more visually integrated. However, organic citations still appear, and they carry more implicit trust with users than labeled placements.
Perplexity experimented with ads in late 2024 but phased them out entirely as of early 2026, citing user trust concerns, and now focuses on a subscription model. Anthropic has committed to keeping Claude ad-free, positioning it as a trust-first platform. Across all of these emerging discovery channels, trust and authority are the currency.
Should Brands Buy ChatGPT Ads?
As AI advertising begins to take shape, many brands are asking whether paid placements inside ChatGPT are necessary to maintain visibility in AI search. At this time, the short answer is no. And the longer answer is actually good news: the earned media SPM does is a major driver of organic AI visibility, and according to Muck Rack, journalistic sources account for nearly 25% of all citations generated by large language models, with non-paid media sources collectively representing approximately 94% of all AI-cited links. ChatGPT ads don’t change that. If anything, they make what we can do together more valuable.
How SPM Builds AI Visibility for Brands
Our GEO strategy is built on a simple but powerful truth: the fundamentals of great PR are also the fundamentals of great GEO. Consistent messaging, top-tier and industry
relevant earned media targeting and high-authority distribution are what get brands cited by AI engines.
Here is what we’re doing right now to protect and grow AI visibility:
· GEO strategy development tailored to brands and unique consumer journey
· GEO key message framework development and deployment across earned and owned channels
· AI-optimized press releases and content structured for discoverability
· Ongoing monitoring and regular reporting, including competitor tracking
· Deeper partnership with SEO and website teams to ensure holistic content alignment
Why Sustained Visibility Beats One-Time Campaigns
One of the most important AI insights we have drawn from our research is that AI engines prioritize recent, consistent content. A one-time campaign spike will not build lasting AI visibility. What does? A sustained cadence of high-quality earned media that keeps your brand fresh in the sources AI engines draw from most.
This is why the retainer model, consistent ongoing PR, is the right architecture for the AI era. Every placement is a data point. Every article is a citation opportunity. Every piece of coverage is a signal to AI platforms that a brand is authoritative, relevant and trustworthy.
The brands winning in AI search are not necessarily the ones with the biggest ad budgets. They are the ones with the most credible, consistent and well-distributed earned media presence.
