Communication Professional’s Banished Press Release Buzzwords for 2024

As 2023’s favorite buzzwords have officially been voted out of our vocabularies (goodbye hack, iconic, cringe-worthy and side hustle!) we would like to add an annual plea for a fond farewell to these press release buzzwords:

Excited, proud, thrilled and honored.
We’ve all done it – written a CEO quote that says something about how “excited we are about our news!” or “how proud we are of our new widget!” or “how thrilled we are about our new executive!”

The impulse to write this type of quote is strong – it’s an industry-wide (bad) habit that should be broken. Why? The C-suite quote is often the only part of a release that is used verbatim in media stories and using a fluff quote about how “excited, thrilled and proud we are” is a missed opportunity to provide meaty, meaningful messaging about your client’s brand and to showcase your leader as someone with interesting things to say.

“We are thrilled to have someone of Jane’s caliber join our organization, and we are excited to have her on board as part of our leadership team,” said CEO.

“Jane’s deep experience in helping growing brands scale their operations for growth will be crucial as we implement our expansion initiative to double the size of our company over the next five years,” said CEO.

For 2024, I challenge communicators to spend a little more time on writing those quotes to make them work harder and do the heavy lifting of getting key messages into media stories and elevating clients.
