‘Tis the season to discuss Christmas Creep. Every year, everyone has the same issue – “Too soon!” they cry. Store decorations are up by October, ads urging us to “Shop Now for Incredible Holiday Deals” are on TV and in the newspaper, and KLUV has even started 24/7 Christmas music – something that as recently as last year didn’t start until after Thanksgiving.
But something else seems different this year. It’s not just the retailers urging us to buy, buy, buy before we’ve even finished our Halloween candy. It seems that people in my neighborhood are embracing the season extra early as well. We have houses that are completely decked out with lights and displays and just yesterday, I drove past a house that had a fully decorated Christmas tree in the window.
I wonder if some people have simply given up on resisting Christmas Creep and are going along with the marketing messages they’ve been complaining about for years. What about you? Christmas in October? Sound about right? Or does it make you go “bah, humbug!”
As for me, I love the holiday season and I have to keep reminding myself that Christmas, while it will be here before we know it, is still more than a month away. Those holiday and end-of-the-year deadlines are not as pressing as the radio and decorations and ads suggest.
